Midge Ure OBE (born James Ure, 10 October 1953, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland) is a pop guitarist, singer, keyboard player, and songwriter. He had particular success in the 1970s and 1980s, most notably with the band Ultravox. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of his real name, Jim.Ure began his career with Slik. Before Slik became famous they were known as Salvation and were the house band playing mostly covers in Glasgow disco Clouds (above Green’s Playhouse), where all major bands played when they came to the city. Midge played guitar. He turned down an offer to be the lead singer of the Sex Pistols[1]. He would go on to play in The Rich Kids (with then-former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock) and temporarily for Thin Lizzy before replacing John Foxx as singer of electronic New Wave band Ultravox in 1979. Shortly afterwards, they had a huge UK hit with "Vienna", and became one of Britain's top bands for several years. Later that year, Ure also formed the band Visage with Steve Strange and fellow former Rich Kid Rusty Egan. The following year, Ure and Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott co-wrote Lynott's biggest solo hit, "Yellow Pearl". A re-recording of the song done in 1981 was used as the theme for Top of the Pops. Midge also worked as a producer for other artists. Steve Harley and New Wave group STRASSE In 1984, Ure co-wrote with Bob Geldof and produced the Band Aid hit, "Do They Know It's Christmas?". He and Geldof jointly set up the Band Aid Trust and he remains active as a Band Aid Trustee to this day. He was also the co-organiser of Live Aid. The following year Ure scored his one and only solo UK number one single with "If I Was". This was followed by the album The Gift. Ultravox as a band did not last more than a year or so after Live Aid. He released the non-album single "Call Of The Wild" in 1986, which reached #27 in the charts. After members of Ultravox went their separate ways, Ure pursued a solo career which included the international hit, 'Breathe,' also used in a Swatch TV ad campaign. In 2005 he organised Live 8 concerts with Bob Geldof with the aim of pressing G8 leaders into taking action to end world poverty. Later that year he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to music and charity. Ure received three honorary degrees in recent years. He was made an Honorary Doctor of Arts in 2005 by the University of Abertay Dundee for his artistic and charity work over the past 30 years. He was made a Doctor of Music by University of Edinburgh in 2006.In 2007 Ure received his third honorary doctorate from the University of Paisley for his contribution to Scottish culture and charity work.[4] He is an Ambassador for Save the Children and in recent years has gone back to Ethiopia and visited Sierra Leone in that capacity. Ure continues to perform his own songs, along with popular Ultravox songs, in concerts both solo, acoustic and with a band. In 2007 the single "Personal Heaven", credited to Midge Ure & X-perience was released in Germany.
Gary Marx (b. Mark Pearman) is founding member of British rock band The Sisters of Mercy and its lead-guitarist and songwriter from 1980 to 1985. He stepped out of the band in 1985 to form goth/pop/rock combo Ghost Dance, which included ex-Skeletal Family vocalist Anne-Marie Hurst. They released two albums and embarked on a number of extensive tours enjoying relative success. However, record-company politics and inconsistency in personnel left the outfit reeling and they disbanded by the end of 1989. In the early nineties he signed up as a teacher at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. His album "Pretty Black Dots" can be purchased at his website listed below. He currently is releasing material as an independent artist through his own website and has set up an archive for his previous band Ghost Dance. In 2007 Marx released, under the "Nineteen Ninety Five and Nowhere" moniker, a self-titled album with material originally written by him in 1995 for The Sisters of Mercy at the invitation of Andrew Eldritch. Out on the 3rd December 2007. This was originally written in 1995 by Gary Marx and was intended as a follow up to First Last and Always, and then Andrew Eldritch pulled out. The album has now been remastered and re-packaged. Nearly 13 years after first coming into being Nineteen Ninety Five and Nowhere receives its first official release on the French independent label D-monic this Winter. Recently completed in 2007 and re-mastered the new 10 track album features songs originally written in 1995 by The Sisters of Mercy co-founder Gary Marx at the invitation of Sisters’ supremo Andrew Eldritch. The material was intended to represent the pair’s first collaboration since the landmark Sisters’ album ‘First and Last and Always’ of 1984, but the notoriously wilful singer pulled out of the project without uttering a single word. The backing tracks went unheard until relatively recently when Marx, convinced of the material’s obvious strength, decided to finish the songs himself, writing lyrics and adding his own distinctive vocals. The response on hearing the results among the Sisters fan-base was immediate and the clamour for the tracks prompted him to make 7 of the songs available via the internet. Despite continual pressure to make the songs more widely available Marx had refused to be drawn until the approach of the Paris based label. Now with all 10 songs included for the first time the album has been re-mastered and re-packaged and is due for release in December 2007. Despite (or perhaps because of ) the twisted path the songs have had to walk these long years, the album works as much more than a mere taste of what might have been - it serves as ample reminder of Marx’s undoubted ability as a writer and guitarist and is essential listening for anyone who has followed his career to date or for newcomers looking for an introduction to his work, this album contains potential hits like Zapruder (which could be seen as the follow up of Body Electric), Open Season, Blinfold, but also wonderful dark ballads like 1995 or Blood Moon. Released on D-Monic. Tracklisting: 01 Blindfold (3:39) 02 Default (3:13) 03 Idiot Nation (3:33) 04 1995 (3:47) 05 Open Season (3:34) 06 Dumb (4:16) 07 Black Eyes Faith (3:55) 08 Zapruder (3:06) 09 Sound And Sound (3:45) 10 Blood Moon (3:23) For More Info.. http://www.garymarx.com
" but of course! teka nga pala, meron ka bang toad the wet sprocket na "one wind blows"? ewan ko ba kung bakit hindi maalis sa isip ko yun (dahil yata yun lagi pinapatugtog sa radyo habang hinihintay ko yung ex-bf ko noon, hehehe) " - Catherinekaye Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American folk rock band consisting of singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. Toad the Wet Sprocket was formed in 1986 at San Marcos High School just outside of Santa Barbara, California, when singer/songwriter Glen Phillips was only 14 and a freshman; the other members were 17 and juniors. The band drew its name from the Eric Idle monologue "Rock Notes" on Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album from 1980, although the name is featured in a parody of The Old Grey Whistle Test on Rutland Weekend Television in 1975. The band's first public appearance was at an open-mic talent contest in September 1986. The band lost the competition. Toad the Wet Sprocket's first album came out in 1989. Bread & Circus was self-financed through their label, Abe Records. The album spawned the singles "Way Away" and "One Little Girl," which made the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, but did not receive much attention. The follow-up to Bread & Circus, Pale, was released in 1990 and saw their sound mature. During the recording of the album, Toad signed to Columbia Records while declining the opportunity to re-record Pale, but negotiating to have Columbia Records reissue Bread & Circus.Featuring the singles "Jam" and the Modern Rock Chart hit "Come Back Down," the album was still not a success; but the singles received heavy airplay on college radio stations. The band finally achieved fame with their third album, fear. The album was released in 1991, and saw the singles, "All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean" reaching the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100. The album became the band's first RIAA-certified platinum album. In 1993, the Mike Myers feature film So I Married an Axe Murderer included the song "Brother" on its soundtrack. "Brother" later appeared in the In Light Syrup compilation album, as well as on the 2004 release of the live album Welcome Home: Live at the Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara 1992. In 1994, after years of heavy touring, the band released their follow-up to fear, Dulcinea. This album spawned the hit singles "Fall Down," which reached #1 on the US Modern Rock charts, as well as #5 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and "Something's Always Wrong," which also charted. Like fear, this album was certified platinum by the RIAA. A compilation album of b-sides and rarities, In Light Syrup, was released in 1995; it included the singles "Good Intentions," which was featured on the soundtrack for the television show Friends, as well as the aforementioned "Brother." The compilation was certified as a gold album in 2001. The release of Coil in 1997 acted as the proper follow up to 1994's Dulcinea. Featuring a more electric, rock sound, it featured the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock hit "Come Down," as well as the singles "Crazy Life" (previously featured on the soundtrack for the film 'Empire Records') and "Whatever I Fear," which did not chart. The album, despite the success of "Come Down" as a single, failed to reach any sales benchmarks. This failure is often attributed to the label doing a poor job of promoting the album.
Toad the Wet Sprocket formally broke up in July 1998, citing creative differences.
Toad the Wet Sprocket, though officially broken up since 1998, has worked together off and on over the years. They performed on several occasions in 1999, although only short sets. Also in 1999, they recorded two studio tracks for a compilation release, P.S. A Toad Retrospective, including one of the first songs they wrote together as a band, "P.S.". The band temporarily reunited in late 2002, playing a benefit for the Rape Crisis Center in Santa Barbara, and opening a few shows for Counting Crows. The group then played a few months of full-length shows in early 2003. Although seemingly successful, at the end of the tour the band decided to continue on their separate paths and careers. In 2004, Toad released an album of a live show that was put to tape in 1992. This album, Welcome Home: Live at The Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara 1992, showcased the height of their popularity during the tour for fear. >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toad_The_Wet_Sprocket
Did you know that after The Bolshoi broke up in 1988, Trevor Tanner went on to create The Kite. The exact timing is sketchy, but what is known is that in October 1992 The Kite played a live gig at the Marquee in London.
The Kite had a short life and never officially released an album. The sound of The Kite is actually very similar to the solo stuff Trevor has gone on to release. Even "City of Gold" sounds very similar to songs he's done with Rathkeltair, thanks to the strings used in the beginning. Perhaps the best track is "Greenwich Park," which echoes the sound of The Bolshoi's "Lindy's Party" period. It is definitely worth a listen. On the other hand, "Save Me" sounds like it could have been on "Giants," though the overall sound of The Kite is definitely a little thin without the backup of Kalicki, Clark and Chown. - Thanks To World of Bolshoi.
Did you know that before there was The Bolshoi, there was Moskow, a post-punk band based out of Trowbridge.
There is little info available about the band, which only put out one single before breaking up. It was apparently managed by Allan Partner, who started TW records. The members included Trevor (who was going by Trevor Flynn -- using his mother's maiden name after his father left his family) and Jan. Whether they formed the band or not is really not known at this time.
The single that was released was "Man From Uncle," which actually has been put out three times. Trevor is credited on bass, Jan on drums, and both probably contributed back-up vocals. Trevor is also listed as a co-writer of "Too Much Commotion." One other mystery - on the initial 1978 SRS-2103 release, David Ashmore is credited with writing "Man From Uncle" and Ashcroft/David Cole are credited with "White Black." On the subsequent releases (on Rialto in 1979, then TW in 1982), Cole's name remains, but a Dave Luckhurst is credited alongside, then instead of, Ashmore. It's possible that David Ashmore and Luckhurst are the same person, just like Trevor Flynn amd Tanner are. But who knows at this point? Cole and Luckhurst went on to play with other small punk banks in the UK. -Thanks to The World of Bolshoi

Michael Joseph Jackson (born August 29, 1958), often referred to as MJ and The King of Pop, is an American musician and entertainer, who debuted on the professional music scene at the age of ten as a member of the Jackson 5,and went on to become a pop icon as a solo artist. His successful career and controversial, enigmatic personal life have been a part of pop culture for almost four decades.Jackson has dominated pop music since the late 1970s, becoming the first black entertainer to amass a strong cross-over following on MTV with his revolutionary transformation of the music video as an art form and as a promotional tool. The popularity of videos aired on MTV such as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" created a tremendous synergy that helped to put the relatively young channel "on the map" and Jackson continued to be a dominant figure on MTV with videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream". Jackson also popularized physically-complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, that have redefined mainstream dance and entertainment. His distinctive style, dance moves, and vocals have influenced a whole generation of hip hop, pop, and R&B artists. He has been cited as the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time" by Guinness World Records, and holds the record for the best-selling album ever, Thriller. Michael Jackson has received thirteen Grammy Awards (eight on a single night in 1984) and two of his solo albums have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Jackson has charted thirteen #1 singles in the United States, more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era. In November 2006, the World Music Awards announced that Jackson had sold over 750 million units worldwide and given $300 million to charity, making Jackson one of the best-selling music artists and one of the most philanthropic performers of the 20th and 21st century. However, Jackson's controversial appearance and actions have damaged his reputation in the eyes of some of the public and album sales have been in decline since the mid 1990s.
From 1988 to 2005, Jackson lived on his Neverland Ranch property, where he built an amusement park and private zoo that was frequently attended by disadvantaged and terminally ill children. Rumors of sleepover parties received both negative media coverage and public attention after it was revealed that children had slept in his bed or bedroom. This first came to light when he was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993. Michael Jackson's relationship with children was brought into the spotlight again in 2003 when the TV documentary Living with Michael Jackson was broadcast. This resulted in Jackson being tried, and later acquitted, of more child molestation allegations and several other charges in 2005. After this, Jackson went on hiatus, traveling to countries such as Bahrain, before starting work on new material in Ireland. He released an album on February 11, 2008 called Thriller 25 (a special edition of the "Thriller" album) which included some new material.
IntroductionHouse music is a style of electronic dance music that was developed by dance club DJs in Chicago in the early to mid-1980s. House music is strongly influenced by elements of the late 1970s soul- and funk-infused dance music style of disco. House music takes disco's use of a prominent bass drum on every beat and developed a new style by mixing in a heavy electronic synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, and reverb- or delay-enhanced vocals. Musical ElementsThe common element of house music is a prominent kick drum on every beat (also known as a four-to-the-floor beat), usually generated by a drum machine or sampler. The kick drum sound is augmented by various kick fills and extended dropouts. The drum track is filled out with hihat cymbal patterns on the eighth-note offbeats, and a snare drum or clap sound on beats two and four of every bar. This pattern is derived from so-called "four-on-the-floor" dance drumbeats of the 1960s and especially the 1970s disco drummers. Producers commonly layer sampled drum sounds to achieve a more complex sound, filling out the audio spectrum and tailoring the mix for large club sound systems. House music is uptempo music for dancing and has a tempo range of between 118 and 135 bpm. Producers use many different sound sources for bass sounds in house music, from continuous, repeating electronically-generated lines sequenced on a synthesizer such as a Roland TB-303 to studio recordings or samples of live electric bassists, or simply filtered-down samples from whole stereo recordings (from classic funk tracks or any other song). Electronically-generated sounds and samples of recordings from genres such as jazz, blues and synth pop are often added to the foundation of the drum beat and synth bass line. House songs may also include disco or soul-style and gospel vocals and additional percussion. Techno and trance, which developed alongside house music, share this basic beat infrastructure, but they usually eschew house's live-music-influenced feel and Black or Latin music influences in favor of more synthetic sound sources and approach. History
House music is the descendant of the 1970s dance style of disco, which blended soul, R&B, funk, salsa, rock and pop with a progressive, pro-diversity message. In the late 1970s, disco songs began incorporating electronic sounds, such as Giorgio Moroder's landmark production of Donna Summer's hit single " I Feel Love" from 1977. In the same year, Kraftwerk's album Trans-Europe Express began being played in New York discos; this album contains a number of the elements and samples that later appeared in techno and drum and bass. In 1984, Lime released an album with a style dubbed "HiNRG", which moulded the late 1970s sounds of Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk into a catchy club style with beatbox programming and breakdown sections. M and M's club mixes and Jesse Saunders - "On and On" (1984/1985) had many elements of electronic dance music that developed into the house music sound, such as synths (including the 303) and minimal vocals. On and On was the first recognised house release to be pressed and sold to the general public and often cited as the 'first house music record'.[1][2] House music also incorporated other influences, such as New Wave, Reggae, European synthpop, industrial and punk as well as the emerging hip hop style. House music DJs experimented with new editing techniques and electronic instruments, such as remixing, sampling, synthesizers, and sequencers.
Etymology The origins of the term "house music" are disputed. The term may be derived from the name of a club called the The Warehouse, which was one of the nightclubs that became popular among the teenagers living in the Chicago area in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Warehouse was patronized primarily by gay black and Latino men,[3] who came to dance to DJ Frankie Knuckles' mix of classic disco, European synthpop, new wave, industrial, and punk recordings. Knuckles released his dance tracks and mixes on the Traxx record label, which became known as house music. The legendary club gained considerable fame in the mid 70s and grew tremendously towards the end the 70s. Knuckles production's increased at that time, and his song "Your Love" is considered by many the track that was the launching pad for house. Chip E.'s recording "It's House" may also have helped to define this new form of electronic music. {{{title}}}. ISBN 978-0752219868. [citation needed] Chip E. claims the name came from methods of labelling records at the Imports Etc record store, where he worked at in the early 1980s.[citation needed] Music that DJ Knuckles played at the Warehouse nightclub was labelled "As Heard At The Warehouse",[citation needed] which was shortened to simply "The House". Larry Heard, aka "Mr. Fingers", claims[citation needed] that the term "house" reflected the fact that many early DJs created music in their own homes, using synthesizers and drum machines, including the Roland TR-808, TR-909, and the TB 303 Bassline synthesizer-sequencer. These synthesizers were used to create a house music subgenre called acid house. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music
The Style Council were an English musical group formed in 1983 by ex- The Jam singer and guitarist Paul Weller with keyboardist Mick Talbot. Both Weller and Talbot had played a significant part in the Mod Revival. The first couple of singles featured drummer Zeke Manyeka. The Style Council also featured a singer called Tracie Young who had solo hits with "The House That Jack Built" and "Give It Some Emotion" on Weller's Respond label. Young can be heard providing emotive and solid backing vocals on "Boy Who Cried Wolf" (1984). The U.S. release of "My Ever Changing Moods" included Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl singing the Weller composition "Paris Match." The permanent lineup grew to include drummer Steve White and Weller's then-wife, vocalist Dee C. Lee. Other musicians, including a horn section, were brought in as required. The band's early singles showed a diversity of musical styles. Speak Like a Child (with its loud soul-influenced style), the extended funk of Money-Go-Round and the haunting synth-ballad Long Hot Summer all featured Talbot on keyboards and organ. These singles were compiled on "Introducing The Style Council" towards the end of 1983. This was a mini-album released in Holland and Japan. The Dutch version was heavily imported to the UK. In 1984, the single "My Ever-Changing Moods" B/W the Hammond Organ instrumental "Mick's Company" reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, remaining to this day Weller's greatest success on the American charts, while the group reached the peak of their success in the UK with the 1985 album Our Favourite Shop.
However, to Weller's fans, the decision to split up The Jam at the height of their commercial success was met with considerable controversy. Weller deliberately distanced himself from The Jam's sound and style, with his use of new musical arrangements and instruments in a much slicker, more heavily produced style. In the place of the Bruce Foxton-Rick Buckler rhythm section were drum and bass parts done entirely on synthesisers. Along with this, the band's early persona - the donning of make-up and New Romantic-style clothing, coupled with mysterious album sleeve notes by "The Cappuccino Kid" (a pseudonym for Paolo Hewitt, biographer of The Jam and friend of Weller), the use of French lyrics and themes (reflected in the titles of their third single, the 1983 À Paris EP, which saw the duo posing in front of the Eiffel Tower, and their debut full-length LP, 1983's Café Bleu), dabblings in rap and, later, dance music, and the homoerotic imagery in the video for the single "Long Hot Summer", only served to further confuse and alienate loyal Jam fans. Structurally, many of the band's early singles were not far removed from The Jam's latter-day soul-pop efforts such as "Town Called Malice" and "Beat Surrender", but they were often criticised as overproduced, despite Weller's impressive songwriting. Moreover, many observers saw even the early albums as indulgent and overly experimental; Trouser Press called Café Bleu "too schizophrenic to be a good album". The criticism only grew as the band's career wore on, and Weller's star status in the UK plunged. The Style Council took a more overtly political approach than The Jam in their lyrics, with tracks such as "Walls Come Tumbling Down", "The Lodgers", and "Come To Milton Keynes" being deliberate attacks on "Middle England" and the Thatcherite principles which were prevalent in the 1980s. Weller was also instrumental in the formation of Red Wedge with Billy Bragg. However, he has more recently expressed that this began to detract from the music - "We were involved with a lot of political things going on at that time. I think after a while that overshadowed the music a bit". In 1986 the band released a live album, Home and Abroad, and in 1987 the album The Cost of Loving was launched, followed later in the year by the upbeat single "Wanted (Or Waiter There's Some Soup In My Flies)". However, by the time "Confessions of a Pop Group" was released a year later, the group's popularity had largely evaporated. The Style Council broke up after recording a house album, Modernism: A New Decade that was rejected by their record label. Weller moved on to a more commercially successful solo career (still featuring Steve White on drums) while Talbot and White released two albums as Talbot/White -- United States of Mind (1995) and Off the Beaten Track (1996). More recently Mick and Steve have formed "The Players" with Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene/Paul Weller) and Aziz Ibrahim (Ian Brown). All of the Style Council's United Kingdom releases (including singles, 12" maxis, albums, compact discs and re-issues thereof) featured the work of graphic designer Simon Halfon (often working with Weller and honing his ideas into a graphic). Weller and Halfon began working together at the end of the Jam's career, and continue to work together to this day on Weller's solo material. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Style_Council

"There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is a song by the English group The Smiths, written by Morrissey and Johnny Marr. It was originally featured on their 1986 album The Queen Is Dead, but despite its enduring popularity it was not released as a single until 1992, after The Smiths split up. Morrissey re-released the song as a double A-side live single (with his cover of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach") in 2005, which reached #11 in the UK singles chart. The song lyrically utilises a first-person narrative concerning yearning, anxiety, and implied romance. Morrissey assumes the role of a person who has, one could infer from the lyrics, been kicked out of home, so seeks solace and company in the form of the person the song addresses - the car's driver. Musically, the song begins with a staccato bridge similar to that heard on "Hitch Hike" by Marvin Gaye and "There She Goes Again" by The Velvet Underground, which recurs as a musical motif throughout the song. With synthesized strings, a balladesque arrangement and yearning lyrics, many listeners have viewed "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" as a straightforward love song despite some ambiguity in the lyrics themselves. Many of Morrissey's lyrics are borrowed from other sources. In particular, the title of this song has been a source of wonder. One credible suggestion has been that the title is a paraphrase of what Hugh Latimer said to Nicholas Ridley as they were about to be burned at the stake as heretics during the reign of "Bloody Mary," Queen Mary I of England: "Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out." Simon Goddard argues in his book Songs That Saved Your Life that the basic narrative story is similar to that of the James Dean film Rebel Without a Cause, in which Dean - an idol of Morrissey's - leaves his torturous home life, being the passenger to a potential romantic partner. Given Morrissey's previous thematic and lyrical borrowings from literature and cinema, this is a viewpoint with some plausibility. According to Goddard, an earlier version lacked some of the finished version's ambiguity, culminating in the line "There is a light in your eyes and it never goes out". In Jack Kerouac's "On the Beats" he writes of his grandfather who would go out in thunderstorms "...and swing his kerosene lamp at the lightning and yell "Go ahead, go, if you're more powerful than I am strike me and put the light out!" ...And the light never went out." "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is also the title of a chapter in Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting. In it the character Spud reflects on a failed opportunity with a girl and he is reminded of a line from the song: "And in a darkened underpass, I thought 'Oh God! My chance has come at last', but then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask." British artist Phil Collins staged a three-part video installation entitled "the world won't listen." Filmed in Colombia, Turkey, and Indonesia, the video trilogy features fans of The Smiths performing karaoke versions of "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_Is_a_Light_That_Never_Goes_Out
The Beloved is a British electronic music group. In 1983, Jon Marsh placed an advert in the music press which read as follows: I am Jon Marsh, founder member of the Beloved. Should you too wish to do something gorgeous, meet me in exactly three year's time at exactly 11am in Diana's Diner, or site thereof, Covent Garden, London, WC2. At the meeting in 1986, Cambridge graduate Steve Waddington was present and the two formed the core, with Tim Havard and Guy Gausden completing the lineup. The band originally had a guitar orientated sound, but soon began using drum machines and dance elements. They sounded at times like New Order, and a summation of this stage of their career can be found on the compilation "Where It Is". After slimming down to a two piece consisting of Marsh and Waddington, they began to embrace a dance sound more wholeheartedly, and in 1988 the single "The Sun Rising" became a club favourite. "The Sun Rising" featured a sample of "O Euchari" by Emily Van Evera, a sample also used by Orbital on their tune "Belfast". This was followed by the album Happiness in 1990, from which the hit single "Hello" was released. By 1993, Waddington left the group and was replaced by Jon Marsh's wife Helena, who was working as a purchaser for the Parisian fashion house Comme des Garçons, for the album Conscience. The band faced some controversy for the video of the single "Sweet Harmony" which consisted of a naked Marsh among a group of women, also naked (although it was shot and edited so as not to show anything which might cause it to be censored). One of the nude stars of this video is British television presenter Tess Daly. By this time the project had dropped the definite article from its name and was now simply called Beloved. "Sweet Harmony" has since been used in Homebase advertising. Beloved singles continue to be remixed and the band has not been formally wound up, but Jon Marsh has for some ten years been concentrating on his flourishing career as a club dj, as well as the raising of his young family. Although Jon collaborated with Steve Waddington on new material and completed an album, he seems to have abandoned this work now, and these tracks will never see the light of day.
14 Iced Bears were a British indie pop band associated with the C86 music scene. Formed in Brighton in 1985, by Rob Sekula and Nick Emery. The band featured a shifting line-up of musicians across their seven-year existence, centred around songwriter and vocalist Rob Sekula and guitarist Kevin Canham. The name came form a pack a biscuits that Emery and Sekula creatively changed from 15 to 14. Their jangly indie pop was characterised by a fuzzy protopunk-influenced guitar sound, and saw them receive modest critical acclaim in Britain's music press as well as prompting disc jockey John Peel to recruit them to record a couple of sessions for his programme on BBC radio.
The group released a handful of singles, including "Come Get Me" on the influential Sarah label, and two full-length albums: the eponymous 14 Iced Bears (1988), and Wonder (1991). Their impact continues to be felt. In 2003 14 Iced Bears were name checked in the indie pop anthem "Twee" by the band Tullycraft and their song The Balloon Song was recorded by The Aislers Set for their 2001 album The Last Match. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14_Iced_Bears
The Mighty Lemon Drops were an English rock group active from 1985 to 1992. Originally called the Sherbert Monsters, the quartet first formed in the spring of 1985 in Wolverhampton, in the The Black Country. Group members Dave Newton and Tony Linehan were the principal songwriters for the group. Their sound can best be described as neo-psychedelia in the vein of Echo & The Bunnymen played with a ringing Rickenbacker as the lead instrument which allowed them to transcend, and not merely imitate, the work of their influences. They were very popular on the College radio circuit and were the soundtrack for many students' lives in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In December of 1985 the quartet, now all officially Mighty Lemon Drops, released their first single, Like An Angel, which shot to the top of the UK Indie Chart. They also recorded a session for John Peel around the same time. They soon landed a major recording contract, the matter, in this case, being late summer when Chrysalis Records signed the group for the UK, & Sire Records / Warner for the USA / Canada.. Previously Paul Marsh, Dave Newton and Tony Linehan played together in a band called Active Restraint in 1982 with Newton leaving to become a founding member of another band, The Wild Flowers (who later had an excellent track called A Kind Of Kingdom and the album Dust in 1986). Becoming part of the "C86 movement" which was championed by the New Musical Express they were soon snapped up by Blue Guitar, a subsidiary of Chrysalis. Derek Jarman produced the video for the polished Out of Hand single in 1987 which was followed by their sole hit Inside Out in 1988. They were eventually dropped by Chrysalis after three albums (Happy Head, World Without End and Laughter) when failing to repeat their initial independent success. During the sessions for Laughter, Linehan left the band being replaced by Marcus Williams. The band released two more albums, Sound...Say Goodbye To Your Standards and Ricochet before finally breaking up in 1992. Two further posthumous album releases followed (All The Way and the greatest-hits package Rollercoaster) and at the end of 2000 the band played a one-off comeback gig in Wolverhampton. In 2006 Dave Newton produced Inside Out (as well as played bass on the track) for the LA noise pop/shoegazers The Lassie Foundation's 2CD collection and final album, Through and Through. Tony Linehan now works as a project manager and emigrated to New Zealand in April 2007. David Newton still works as a recording engineer / producer, & has recently completed projects for, amongst others, The Little Ones and The Blood Arm. - Discography [edit] Singles - Like An Angel 1985

Modern English is the form of the English language spoken since the great vowel shift, completed in roughly 1550. Despite some differences in vocabulary, material from the early 17th century, such as the works of William Shakespeare and the King James Bible, is considered to be in Modern English, or more specifically, they are referred to as Early Modern English, and most people who are fluent in the English of the early 21st century can read these books with little difficulty. Modern English has a large number of dialects, spoken in diverse countries throughout the world. Most of these, however, are mutually intelligible. This includes American English, Australian English, British English, Canadian English, Caribbean English, Hiberno-English, Indo-Pakistani English, New Zealand English, Philippine English, Singaporean English and South African English. These dialects may be met in different contexts, for example some American actors in Hollywood historical or mythic epics often employ British-derivative accents while many British, Australian and non-native English-speaking international pop singers sing in an 'industry neutral' American accent to appeal to an international demographic. According to Ethnologue, there are over 508 million speakers of English as a first or second language as of 1999, a number dwarfed only by the Chinese language in terms of the number of speakers. However, Chinese has a smaller geographical range: it is spoken primarily in mainland China and Taiwan, and by a sizable immigrant community in North America. In contrast, English is spoken in a vast number of territories, including Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Southern Africa. Its large number of speakers, plus its worldwide presence, have made English a common language for use in such diverse applications as controlling airplanes, developing software, conducting international diplomacy, and business relations. Modern English began in England during the Elizabethan era which is also around the time of the great poet William Shakespeare. English was adopted in regions around the world, such as United States, India, and Australia, through colonization by the British Empire. So as Great Britain began colonising North America, Asia, and Africa, the English language and other customs and ideas spread around the world. This is considered an aspect of the Columbian Exchange. Early Modern English lacked uniformity in spelling, but Samuel Johnson's dictionary, published in 1755 in England, was influential in establishing a standard form of spelling. Noah Webster did the same in America, publishing his dictionary in 1828; see American and British English spelling differences. Public education increased literacy, and more people had access to books (and therefore to a standard language) with the spread of public libraries in the 19th century. Many words entered English from other languages, as a result of contact with other cultures through trade and settlement, and the migration of large numbers of people to the United States from other countries. World War I and World War II threw together people from different backgrounds, and the greater social mobility afterwards helped to lessen the differences between social accents, at least in the UK. The development of radio broadcasting in the early 20th century familiarized the population with accents and vocabulary from outside their own localities, often for the first time, and this phenomenon continued with film and television. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_English
The Mock Turtles are a Manchester-based indie rock band, formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1985, who enjoyed some success in the early 1990s. Their best-known song is "Can You Dig It?" Led by former Judge Happiness singer Martin Coogan, older brother of television regular Steve Coogan, the band began to pick up attention around 1990, with tracks such as "Lay Me Down" and "And Then She Smiles" on the Imaginary label. It was "Can You Dig It?", however, which gained them wider attention. Originally a B-side to "Lay Me Down", the band's new record label, Siren, re-issued it with additional guitar work, and "Can You Dig It?" breached the Top Twenty in the UK singles chart. The Mock Turtles, however, were unable to follow up the early success and were dropped by their label, three members briefly joining up as Ugli in the mid-1990's, remaining in limbo until Vodafone used "Can You Dig It?" for an advertising campaign in 2003. This saw the band make a comeback with Fatboy Slim doing a remix of Can You Dig It?'. Eight new tracks were included on a new Greatest Hits album, together with older songs from their early 1990s peak. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mock_Turtles
Teodoro de Villa Diaz, more popularly known as Teddy Diaz (April 1, 1963 - August 21, 1988), was the founding guitarist of the Filipino rock band The Dawn. At the height of his career and at the peak of The Dawn's popularity in the late 1980s, he was stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend's house by two bystanders allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol. In spite of his early demise, his influence is still felt among many guitarists in the Philippines today and he has become a legend among many Filipino musicians. The Dawn, and the Filipino music industry also consider Teddy Diaz to be the band's driving force until today. In memory of Teddy Diaz, The Dawn has recorded a song that pays tribute to him: I Stand With You.Teddy was also distinguished apart from other rock musicians due to his positive habits: he never smoked and didn't drink much. Teddy's father was the legendary Filipino actor Vic Diaz of Sampaguita Pictures fame; his grandfather was the late Pompeyo Diaz, a well known judge. He was a godchild of the "King of Philippine Movies", the late Fernando Poe, Jr. Teddy Diaz was born on April Fools' Day, and was often teased because of this. He was the first grandchild on both sides of his family. Diaz had two brothers, Carl and Loren. Among the family members, Teddy's strongest bond was with his paternal grandfather, the late Justice Pompeyo Diaz. He inherited his grandfather's discipline and straightforwardness that would later show in his music. Teddy Diaz spent both grade school and high school in his father's and grandfather's alma mater, Ateneo de Manila University, which he considered his spiritual home. After high school, he enrolled in the University of the Philippines as an architecture student and stayed there for three years. He transferred to the Philippine Women's University after his third year in UP and took up music with guitar as his major. Aside from being a musician, Diaz was also gifted with a talent in drawing. He would spend time with Fine Arts students in PWU, and would draw comic book characters and different electric guitar designs for relaxation. His mother and brothers still treasures all the drawings that he left behind. Teddy Diaz was a very passionate musician, according to those who knew him well including his close friend and second successor as guitarist for The Dawn, Francis Reyes. Diaz was said to practice at least eight hours a day on his guitar. Teddy was "very ambitious" according to Reyes; he wasn't satisfied of being just a good guitarist -- he wanted to be the best. This probably explains why he practiced eight hours a day. Aside from the guitar, Teddy also played keyboards and drums, and according to his brother Loren, he also knew how to play other instruments as well.
